Through my deep dive into the hair extension industry, one thing has become painfully clear: brands lie. And not just a few—almost all of them. The glossy marketing campaigns, the promises of “ethically sourced” hair, and the claims of quality are, more often than not, carefully crafted illusions designed to mislead consumers.
It’s unsettling to realize that the companies we trust and invest so much money in often deceive and exploit their customers. But, unfortunately, it’s true. The most horrifying part? The origins of the hair. Some of it comes from truly appalling sources—sewer drains, hair collected from brushes, and even morgues. Yes, morgues. Hair that’s marketed as “natural” or “Remy” may have shocking and unsanitary origins that most customers would never suspect.
Even more troubling are the countless reports of women and children being held at gunpoint, forced to shave their hair for profit. In other cases, women in impoverished communities are manipulated or coerced into selling their hair for a fraction of its true value, while companies turn around and sell it to consumers at exorbitant prices. These are harsh, uncomfortable truths that the industry often ignores—but ones we can no longer overlook. It’s time to demand transparency and hold brands accountable for the unethical practices hidden behind their polished facades.
Before you invest thousands of dollars in hair extensions, take a moment to ask your stylist where the hair comes from. If they can’t give you an answer, that’s your cue to find another brand—one that sources ethically and can back up its claims with proof.
